Among all the Grand Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin, the one that I drink probably the least would be Griotte-Chambertin. Not that it is of lesser quality, instead it is probably the best Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Crus after Chambertin Clos de Beze and Chambertin. It is just because it is the smallest Grand Cru in Gevrey-Chambertin with just 2.73 hectares. Only Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, Romanée-Conti and La Romanee are smaller than Griotte-Chambertin in the whole of Burgundy. There are also just a few producers in Burgundy producing Griotte-Chambertin. Domaine des Chezeaux alone already owns about 60% of the whole Griotte-Chambertin. Wines from Griotte-Chambertin usually is very perfumed with strong sweet cherry jam flavour.
The bottle I have is 2002 Griotte-Chambertin, Domaine Rene Leclerc. Rene Leclerc does not own any vineyard in Griotte-Chambertin. Instead, Rene Leclerc farms for Domaine des Chezeaux. In exchange, Rene Leclerc got two-third of the grapes.
This wine has explosive and intense aromas of pungent spices, earth, sour cherry, floral and damp leaves. A very complicated and attractive nose. In palate, sour cherry changed to mouth-coating yet fresh sweet cherry flavour. Excellent length with sour cherry flavour aftertaste. This is a very good Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru that worth recommendation.
